Health care product manufacturer Johnson & Johnson has been ordered to pay $72 million to the family of Jackie Fox, a woman who died from ovarian cancer after using the company’s talcum-based products for years.
A St. Louis jury determined yesterday that Johnson & Johnson will pay a $62 million award and $10 million in compensatory damages to the woman’s family, after years of using Johnson’s baby powder and another talc-based product caused her to develop ovarian cancer.
J&J is facing roughly 1,200 lawsuits that allege its Baby Powder and Shower-to-Shower products cause ovarian cancer. The lawsuits claim that J&J understood the risks for decades but neglected to warn customers.
Fox’s case is the first time a jury has awarded damages relating to the health care product manufacturer’s talc-based products.
